Bites, Sips and Tastes

Who can eat just one, handful?

It’s that time of year. Kid’s activities in full swing between birthday parties, sports banquets and playdates, you try to grab a bite of something reasonably healthy to get you through. Yet, even with the best intentions, we come up short and soon…very soon, the kid foods at these events become your staple. By the end of day, week, month or year, you end up feeling like an overstuffed goldfish cracker.

 

We have all been there….at yet another kid event telling ourselves “I am  not going to eat the pizza or birthday cake this time.  Well, okay maybe just one bite because my daughter isn’t going to finish her slice of pizza and I am alittle hungry. It is lunch time afterall and one bite will hold me over until I get out of this party and home for some healthy adult food.”  We know what happens next. A very slippery slope that has us topping off 2 slices of pizza with the “oh no, I couldn’t birthday cake.” Leaving the party we vow to never do that again.  We tell ourselves “at least I didn’t have the ice cream with my cake,” which makes us feel better and we promise to plan better next time. And then it happens again and again.  Not because we love kid’s party food ( although I do love Safeway birthday cake frosting or any frosting for that matter:)  but because we, as women & moms, put ourselves on the back burner when it comes to planning and taking care of our own needs. In my case, it happened for about 10 years, guess I’m a slow -learner.

I witness countless women making a day of waffle bites from their kid’s breakfast, lattes, finishing off  kids ice cream after school , a glass of wine or two, followed by a few french fries and crusts of grilled cheese sandwiches the kids left on their plate. I even had a friend tell me her dinner consisted of goldfish crackers from her son’s high chair and wine every night because her husband worked late, so why cook? Any of this sound familiar?
And yet, women with young children are some of the biggest calorie burners out there ( read, constant motion) and still struggle to lose or maintain their weight. Those bites, sips and tastes add up quickly over time and sadly, we hardly realize we ate them. They are not satisfying, do not fill us up and leave us nutritionally out of balance. This scenario on a regular basis will leave you even more fatigued and looking around for the quickest pick me up..more sugar please?
Ladies, take advantage of this time in your life with your revved up metabolisms. Don’t waste all of that bonus calorie “burn” on things like goldfish crackers and pizza you have tasted 1000 times before…save the bites, sips & tastes for the special occasion great homemade food that is worth every bite.
Eating well takes planning.  Plan ahead before heading out to these events….eat BEFORE you go (even it means you will arrive 15 mins late), bring an apple for the car or stick with the fresh veggie platter or cheese stick at the party. NEVER show up hungry…you know what will happen.
Put yourself first. Take care of your health and your family will forever benefit.Apple with white background

Halloween “Left Over” Cookies

Halloween is behind us now. Our Halloween hangovers are gone ( you kow, too much candy plus too many adult beverages while trick or treating). We are looking forward to Thanksgiving in two weeks, as we will begin our Thanksgiving food hangover. What do we do with this leftover candy? With four trick or treating kids at home, we have A LOT of candy. Even my occasional sneak or secret tossing in the trash cannot get rid of most of the loot. So when life gives you candy…you make cookies!

Our Halloween left over cookie tradition started years back when my kids were not willing to throw out their leftovers ( who can blame them) but were tiring of it. We decided to chop up our favorites and put it into a cookie. I like to think of this as a healthier way to eat candy. ( oxymoron, I know…healthy + candy in a sentence together)  If you make an oatmeal cookie with nuts & raisins and a little of your candy, it becomes a high fiber, healthy treat! Even if you do not have trick or treaters at home, this is an excellant way to use up the candy you bought to hand out or have at a party.

It’s really very simple….Make any of your favorite cookie recipes ( I like to make a souped up version of the Nestle Toll House recipe) with whole wheat flour, oats, nuts, flax seed, etc and add 1 cup of your favorite candy chopped into small chunks. We have used Snickers, Milky Ways, M&Ms, Reeses Peanut Butter Cups (my favorite) and many more.  I sometimes make a mystery cookie with a mix of candy and the kids like to guess what is in it. Bake as directed. These cookies freeze well so that you can enjoy Halloween for a long time.

I hope you start your own healthy Halloween left over cookie tradition. Traditions in the kitchen last many lifetimes and make the best memories. Who knows, maybe next will be an Easter version with chopped up chocolate bunnies and jelly beans?!

Day One

This is an updated re-post from last year. Soon after I started training last year, some family & heallth issues kept me from continuing.  All is good now and I am thrilled to be training alongside 12 fabulous LOLA women for the Nike Marathon in October.

July 8, 2013….Today is Day One of Marathon training. In 15 weeks, I plan to cross the finish line of my fourth marathon. This is not an easy feat for me or anybody that has ever attempted a 26.2 mile race. 26.2 miles is a long ******* way on your feet!  Many people think that because I am a Nutritionist, Run Coach, Fitness trainer and have competed in triathlons, running races and everything else in between for so many years that a “simple little marathon” should be easy for me, right? No way. 20 years ago I transitioned to triathlons because running a marathon was just too hard! I figured if I was going to be out there for 4 hours, I may as well be doing 3 different sports. (“at least I will get to sit down for awhile on the bike portion,” I thought.)

I am human just like you… in a constant state of “juggle” in my attempt to balance family, home, work, life & athletics. I am married with 4 school age kids, own my own business working crazy hours, manage the household along with all of my mom duties and need to find time every day to exercise. I plan my exercise times for the week on Sunday evening and stick to that schedule as best I can. This way, when I have to get up at 5am on a Saturday morning to run before work….I am ready for it. Being a Nutritionist, you may also think I eat “perfectly” all of the time. No way. I do really have a fairly good diet but one of my favorite foods is frosting! I have been known to go out of my way for a nice frosting covered dessert….yum! Honestly, no one eats perfectly all of the time but if you can live by the 80-20 rule ( 80% healthy eating, 20% treats) you are doing okay.

I chose this challenge of the marathon as a gift to myself. A gift, you say? Some think it’s a more like a horrible form of torture. A gift, might be a day at the spa or a much needed vacation. But to me this is like a vacation. While I am training, long runs in the wee hours alone, it becomes an adventurous journey every time I step out that door. Where will it take me, what will I see, how will I feel, people I will meet all become part of this adventure. And for those hours I am out there, it is all about ME and everything else slips away. For you women out there, I know ME time is hard to find. No matter how you get it….make time to find it. It will save your life.

I promise to not bore you for the next 105 days with the details of my training. I really am hoping to inspire you to set a goal for yourself and have your own Day One. Maybe it’s a mile, a 5k, or half marathon…it all begins with a commitment to yourself.  Your Day ONE  will be the beginning of a change. Train along with me. I will support & cheer you on through your own adventure!
